Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh

Dalhousie Many may call Dalhousie as Dull and Lousy but that’s exactly the good thing about Dalhousie.  In fact, its status of being less popular than its cousins Shimla and Manali has made it a destination of choice among discerning travellers. No wonder intrepid travellers like Rabindranath Tagore in 1873 and Subhash Chandra Bose in 1937 visited Dalhousie.  It is also said that residents of Dalhousie claim that on a clear night they can spot Lahore beyond the border.

Dalhousie is located in the state of Himachal Pradesh. It is close to 80 km from Pathankot, which is the nearest railhead to this lovely hill station. Dalhousie is admired for its exquisite views and a peaceful ambience. One can see clouds come down from mountains to kiss the beautiful landscape at one moment while the next moment they play hide and seek with the Dhauladhars, changing the shape of the skyline in quick succession.

Dalhousie is spread over five hills and it has its own distinctive flavor. Attractive cottages and villas cling to the deodar and pine mantled hills of Dalhousie. Nothing seems to matter except the beauty and the moment to a traveller in Dalhousie. Pink and red rhododendrons in the season further add to the beauty of Dalhousie. The trees are dressed in different shades of green. There is no swirl of traffic. The shops are small and trim.

If you love enjoying long walks, Dalhousie is the place. In fact this hill station is best explored on foot. One can visit the old churches of Dalhousie. Of the five churches in Dalhousie the oldest is dedicated to St. John and you can find it in all its glory near the GPO. Built on stern Romanesque lines, the 1863 Protestant church contains the 19th century stained glass painting of Jesus flanked by St John and St Peter. The best preserved church in Dalhousie, however, is the one attached to Sacred Heart School. The chapel has an 18th century Mannborg piano.

To enjoy the breathtaking views, a traveller can visit Kalatop which is located 8 km away from the center of Dalhousie. Other places of tourist interest in Dalhousie include Panchpulla (Five Bridges), Satdhara, a waterfall, which has long been known for its mineral water which was once shipped to England on a regular basis. Dalhousie also has Dainkund - the Singing Hill.
