Gangotri is one of the sacred places from where river Ganga origin. It is situated at an elevation of 3048 m at a distance of 99km from Uttarkashi. According to legends, Lord Shiva rewarded King Bhagiraths after his penance Ganga came down to earth. However, due to her pride, and the fact that the earth would be devastated if Ganga came down in her full force, Lord Shiva caught her in his locks. It was then announced that Goddess Uma or Parvati, Shiva's consort, would bathe in the Ganges daily and only then Ganga would be descend on the earth Gangotri attracts number of tourists as they find daunting rivers and the unravel mysteries of the supernatural world.

Main Attractions of Gangotri

Submerged Shivling : Here you will the natural rock Shivling, submerged in the river. According to mythology, Lord Shiva sat at this spot to receive the Ganga in his matted locks. You will find the Shivling that become visible in the early winters when the water level goes down.

Mythological Mystery : According to mythology, Goddess Ganga- the daughter of heaven, manifested herself in the form of a river to absolve the sins of King Bhagirath's predecessors, Lord Shiva received Ganga into his matted locks to minimize the enormous impact of her fall. She came to be called Bhagirathi at her legendary source.

Gangotri Temple : This is 18th century temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga. This is the sacred place where King Bhagirath worshipped Lord Shiva. It is believed that at this place Ganga have touched earth at this spot. According to another legend, Pandavas performed the great 'Deva Yagna' to atone the deaths of their kinsmen in the epic battle of Mahabharata. This temple is an altitude of 20 ft. High structure made of white granite.
