Rishikesh, Uttrakhand
RishikeshLocated just 250 km north of Delhi, Rishikesh is set in the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas. It is an important pilgrimage town of the Hindus. And no wonder why; Rishikesh has been the land of sages from time immemorial; it is also the gateway to Chardham of Uttarakhand and Panch Kedar Yatra; and since the Betels set foot in Rishikesh in the 70s, it has come to known as the Yoga capital of the world.

This holy town in Uttarakhand is scattered around both banks of the Ganga. Rishikesh is the first town from where the Ganga enters the plains of India. The river water here is unpolluted, cool in summer and cold in winter. The town of Rishikesh gets its name from the Sanskrit word ‘Hrishik’, meaning senses, and ‘Ish’, meaning master or lord. The legend has it that Sage Raibhya did penance here and attained Lord Vishnu, the conqueror of senses.  And hence, by conquering his senses, Rishi Raibhya gave the place its name Hrishikesh, which is written as Rishikesh.

Rishikesh not only appeals to the religiously inclined and spiritual seeker but to travellers, who are looking for a cool escape in the summer. Since Rishikesh is located at the Himalyan foothills, it offers respite from the scorching heat and dust of the plains. Travellers can visit Rishikesh throughout the year but the best time to travel to Rishikesh is from March to April, and September to October.

Rishikesh is also a destination of choice among adventure lovers. It offers a host of adventure activities, which include trekking, rappelling and rafting. In fact Rishikesh is most popular as a rafting destination.  

Since Rishikesh is known as the Yoga capital of the world, there is no dearth of ashrams and Yoga schools in Rishikesh.  The well known Parmarth Niketan Ashram is the most popular yoga center in the town. The ashram has thousands of rooms and numerous Yoga courses. Other important ashrams in Rishikesh to try your hand at Yoga include the Yoga Study Center (for Hatha Yoga), Sri Ved Niketan, Shivananda Ashram, Yoga Niketan, Sacha Vedic Sansthan, and the famous Transcendental Meditation Center of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Besides Yoga and adventure, Rishikesh has many popular religious sites and temples that should not be missed while on a visit to Rishikesh. Laxman Jhula, Ram Jhula, Bharat Mandir, Gita Bhawan and Triveni Ghat are the most popular places of tourist interest in Rishikesh.
