Shimla, Himachal Pradesh
ShimlaLong after the British left Shimla - their most loved and respected hill station in the north of India, it has not lost its charm.  Shimla rightly called the Queen of hills is a summer retreat and destination of choice in the winter season for travellers who want to touch the snow for the first time in their life.  This lovely hill station is perched at an altitude of 2159 meters above sea level in the state of Himachal Pradesh.

Like most hill stations in India, the credit of discovering the beauty and charms of Shimla goes to the British, who discovered Shimla in 1819. Shimla was a non-descript village, which was under the rule of the Nepalese kingdom. It was acquired by the British during Lord William Bentinck's time and by 1830, the high ranking British officers had started making holiday homes in Shimla to escape unbearable heat of Calcutta in summer months. It was in the year 1864, British declared Shimla the summer capital of India.

Shimla is located in the south of Himachal Pradesh about 350 km from the capital city of New Delhi. Besides being a popular tourist destination and most sought after hill station from the northern plains of the country, Shimla is also the state capital. Shimla is located 260 km away from Manali, another most popular tourist destination in Himachal Pradesh.

Like most hill station developed by the British, Shimla too has a Mall, which in fact buzzes with activity even today as it used to be during the Raj era. The Mall runs along the Ridge, where one can visit the Scandal Point.  The Mall is also the most famous shopping area, and one can find various shops and restaurants here.

Another major tourist attraction is the Raj era Vice-Regal Lodge. Built in 1888 and formerly the residence of Lord Dufferin, the British Viceroy, the classic building is located about 4.5 km from Scandal Point. The Vice-Regal Lodge presents the old world charm and reminds travellers of the glorious British era. It has beautiful lawns and houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Study.

Shimla being a popular holiday destination and hill resort has many hotels. Hotels and resorts in Shimla are well equipped all modern facilities. Resorts and hotels in Shimla range from cheap budget hotels to luxury hotels and resorts. Toshali Royal View Resort is an ideal choice to stay in Shimla.
