Mizoram - land of the hill people

Situated majestically on the high hills of the northeastern part of the country, Mizoram is a lovely place to visit and the pride of this part of India. Its incredible natural beauty comprising of meandering streams, hilly terrains, apart from rich and varied flora and fauna inspire the discerning tourists no end. Also called the Land of the Blue Mountains, Mizoram shares its national borders with three Indian states. It shares its international borders with the Chittagong hill tracts of Bangladesh.

Mizoram Attractions

Picturesque Aizawl is the capital of Mizoram and is a nice tourist destination. Dotted with charming timber houses and a wealth of flowers, each house in the area is known for its own window box of abundantly blooming orchids.

Mizoram is sometimes also known as the land of scenic rivers and lakes which dot the beautiful landscapes of the state further adding to the state’s amazing beauty and enhancing its tourist appeal. Tlawng (also called Dhaleswari or Katakhal), Tuirial (Sonai), Tut (Gutur), Tuivawl…these are just some of the many famed rivers of the state, while Palak, Tamdil, Rengdil and Rungdil are the state’s key lakes.

While the Palak Lake is located in Chhimtuipui, southern Mizoram; the Tamdil Lake is a natural lake located about 105 kms from Aizwal. Tamdil is a lovely tourist hotspot and a holiday resort. Champai, Tamdil, Thenzawl and Vantawng Fall are some of the other key tourist hotspots of Mizoram and much thronged by the travelers.

The Land of Mizos or Highlanders, Mizoram also boasts of a unique culture which much enchants the visitors. Its crafts are also a big draw with a distinct identity of their own. The elaborate traditional designs woven by the local women are just too good. The traditional craft of Mizos displayed so well in their superb cane and bamboo work is also a big draw.

Shopping in Mizoram

Mizoram offers some great options to the shoppers. The Khumbeu ceremonial bamboo hat is one of the most sought after shopping objects to take back home as wonderful souvenirs. To buy handicrafts and handloom items of Mizoram, one is advised to visit Bara Bazaar -- the main shopping centre of Aizawl. Here, one is likely to get good options. New market, Thakthing Bazar, Ritz Market, Bazar Bungkawn, Solomon Cave and Burma Lane also house a good range of such items.
