Sri Gokilambal Thirukameswara Temple in Pondicherry

Sri Gokilambal Thirukameswara Temple at Villiannur is an architectural gem located about 10 km from Pondicherry. It is well known for its 10-day annual Brahmotsavam festival.
During this time there is a grand procession of a massive 15 meters tall and splendidly carved temple chariot. The main shrine housing the 'Shivalinga' and the shrines dedicated to the Devi and Murugan date back to the 12th century Chola period.
This temple has a little bit of French heritage attached to it, though not in its architecture, but in some of its traditions. During French colonial rule, the Governor of Puducherry used to join the temple car procession at this temple.
