Gopalpur - Gopalpur on Sea

The Gopalpur-on-sea -- also called just Gopalpur -- is a famous and breathtaking sandy beach in the Ganjam District, Orissa. This enchanting tourist hotspot is located just 16km away from Berhampore, which is much famous for its amazing handicrafts. Coming back to Gopalpur, it is well-known for blue waters and lined with coconut and palm trees.

Earlier renowned as the Port of Paloura, Gopalpur was the place from where during the ancient period sea traders went on long sea voyages to many distant places such as Java, Sumatra and Bali and dealt in the highly profitable business of silk and pearl.

Afterwards, it became a transit place to export sugar and cheap manpower for the tea gardens of Assam. The collapsing walls and the pillars of an ancient jetty coupled with some disintegrating bungalows stand testimony to the spot’s great maritime background.

Whether it is the rising Sun over the azure waters or the melodious lapping of waves sparkling in the dazzling moonlight, this beautiful tourist place offers a memorable experience to the tourists. There’s an old lighthouse on the beach. It offers lovely vistas of the place and its striking surroundings.

Gopalpur Beach is rather secluded and peaceful beach resort. It is also a great place for sailing and surfing. No wonder, many beach lovers have repeatedly said that it is the one of the finest destinations in its category, especially when one is talking about the beaches located on the Eastern Coast. This beach’s popularity has perhaps made the concerned authorities to give a new lease of life to the port and make it suitable for the modern ships.

Gopalpur-on-sea is a fairly and comparatively clean sea destination for the purpose of swimming and sun bathing. Still, one would do well to take all the required safety measures as the deceitful undercurrents here could be a cause of worry.

When to Visit

The period between December and January is the best time to visit Gopalpur-on-sea as during this time a famous and interesting beach festival is held here.
